It includes tables of manufacture dates and can be accessed in digital form on a computer or smartphone for easy reference. S&W Revolvers 1945 to Present. I can only guess that you guys get sick of this question but it appears that S&W serial number lookup resources are just non-existent. Newer S&Ws also have the SN inside the crane. It is possible the Highway Patrolman is pre model 28. If the gun is an N-frame and has a checkered topstrap, then its a Model 27. That is why Smith & Wesson collectors "never say never" when asked if S&W ever made a certain configuration or variation. Nobody knows for sure unless they have the gun in their hand. That would be ~1987. S&W started at AAA0000 in 1980 (for revolvers) and with a few exceptions (as noted by carguychris) they simply cycle thru them. ie.
