Some shooters start with a 5-10 grain load of real black powder and then some Pyrodex over that. Sounds like a lot of fussing and won't solve your problem. You will need real black powder to prime, for sure.

Build by Hopkins and Allen in early 70s. I bought this rifle for a much grander project. I was planning to make wooden side panels for barrels and reset ramrod pipes. Stock had damage to toe, that I repaired, as well as a cracked buttplate. Had to take a much larger one and refit it.The dovetails on a CVA Hawken are metric (don't know the exact size) smaller than the 3/8 sights most suppliers have. I bought the 3/8 and with a little judicious filing on them they fit the CVA dovetails. I didn't want to enlarge the dovetails in case I went back to the stock sights. The front & rear are the same size.The Traditions PA Pellet Flintlock has a 26" barrel with a 1 in 48 twist and a removeable breech plug. Overall length is 45" It has a half stock and is similar in style to a GPR or Hawken. The Pennsylvania Rifle (no-pellets) is a traditional longrifle with the slow twist. Barrel is 40.In the next few days I'll be out at the board. Going to test 80 grain 2f, 2 over powder cards, 1 & 1/4 oz 5 shot, lubed fiber wad. The second is the same but shot is in a paper shotcup. Third is the same as both but will vary powder down to 70 grain. Some builders that try to recreate specific longrifles as exactly as possible try to use the same type of mechanism as the original rifle they are copying, even if the mechanism is hidden. .
